Jeremy Nelson didn’t always plan on going into staffing. In fact, with a degree in Biology and Chemistry, he originally imagined a career in the medical field. But after landing a role at a staffing firm focused on technical positions in power generation, he discovered a passion for connecting people with opportunity—and he never looked back.
“I realized I had a knack for helping talented engineers find the right roles,” Jeremy says. “Over time, my focus shifted toward Engineering, Energy, and Manufacturing because I’ve always admired the innovation and impact coming from those sectors.”
Starting as a recruiter, Jeremy steadily expanded his scope—first moving into account management which gave him an understanding of client needs and the broader strategy required to build long-term partnerships. Eventually, he moved into leadership roles where he oversaw teams and helped others develop their expertise.
"Be curious, stay flexible, and above all, listen"
Now a Director of Business Development, he partners with clients to deliver tailored workforce solutions that meet evolving technical demands. “It’s been incredible to witness how my dreams have evolved, from placing one person in the right job to influencing larger workforce solutions for entire organizations,” he said.
Since joining Planet three years ago, Jeremy has had a front-row seat to some of the firm’s most exciting initiatives. A standout moment? “Collaborating on a renewable energy project where we staffed many highly skilled professionals in just a few months,” he recalls. “It was empowering to know our work directly impacted such a forward-thinking industry.”
Jeremy is energized by the rapid changes in the Engineering, Energy, and Manufacturing spaces. From the rise of clean energy and sustainable infrastructure to the growing influence of automation and AI in manufacturing, he sees a landscape full of opportunity—and a critical need for adaptable, skilled talent.
For those considering a career in staffing, Jeremy offers this advice: “Learn the industries inside and out. Be curious, stay flexible, and above all, listen—because clients and candidates want to feel heard and understood.”
Before finding his path in staffing, his career was a bit of a Swiss Army knife, working a variety of jobs to explore options and develop a broad skillset. “I worked as a police dispatcher, which taught me how to stay calm under pressure and think on my feet in high-stakes situations,” he said. “I have also worked in construction, building wastewater treatment centers in Michigan, been part of a park district team, and worked for a youth hockey organization. But perhaps the most unique experience was spending three months working at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal, which gave me a newfound appreciation for different cultures and perspectives”
But his favorite role of all time?
“That would be my caddying job at Shoreacres Country Club,” he laughs. “That’s where I learned the art of building strong relationships … and reading greens.” Jeremy says that this wide range of job experience has shaped the adaptability, problem-solving abilities, and people skills that he brings to his career today.
If he could travel anywhere in the world, he’s got his eyes on Japan—drawn by its balance of ancient tradition and cutting-edge innovation.
And if he could have dinner with anyone, it would be Warren Buffett. “His wisdom, humility, and long-term approach to life, business, and philanthropy are things I really admire.”
As for what keeps him inspired in his current role, Jeremy is clear: “The best part of my job is knowing the work we do has real-world impact. Whether it’s helping someone land their dream role or supporting a company’s mission, it all matters—and the relationships I’ve built along the way make it that much more rewarding.”
